Queens Birthday Weekend 2008
Walkers: Trevor , Jenny Jim, Frank , Steve, Theo
Maps Mt Yengo 1:25,000 First Edition and Moruben 1:25,000 Second EditionA week of rain before the Queens Birthday weekend was not a good omen; nevertheless there were six intrepid souls willing to the take the chance.
As we headed off to our tents after tea Jim confidently pronounced that there was not a cloud in the sky and the rain was gone. Two hours later the clouds rolled in and it rained all night.
Yengo is a magnificent wilderness area, from the every ridge top there are terrific views; from horizon to horizon and not a sign of civilization. Over the weekend we did not see another soul and there was little evidence human presence once you leave the service trails. Whenever I am in this area I am reminded of some of the epic club trips form the past that I have read about, such as a walk on the Queens Birthday in 1954 when Arthur Munro lead a trip from the Putty road to Wollombi. At that time there were no maps of the area and the walkers relied on public transport to reach the start and to travel home after. Makes you appreciate modern conveniences such as good topographic maps, GPS technology and motor cars.
The next opportunity to enjoy Yengo is the 5 & 6 September, the club has booked Big Yango Homestead for a more luxurious weekend in the wilderness, see the walks programme for details Trevor
